Anchoring

Mental Efficiency · Emphasis

Initial information provided (an "anchor") shapes subsequent judgments and decisions.

Impact 4/5Ease 5/5eCommerce suitability: High

Why it works

Based on Tversky & Kahneman's anchoring research (1974), initial numerical or categorical information creates reference points that bias subsequent evaluations. The brain uses anchors as starting points and insufficiently adjusts from them, even when anchors are clearly irrelevant. This systematic bias affects pricing, quality, and value judgments across all decision contexts (Strack & Mussweiler, 1997).
