Inaction Inertia
After missing a favorable opportunity, people are less likely to take action even if a similar offer appears.
Why it works
Based on Tykocinski & Pittman's research (1998), missing initial opportunities creates regret that inhibits future action on similar offers. Comparison to foregone deals makes subsequent offers feel less attractive, creating behavioral paralysis. This regret-induced inertia requires psychological distance or reframing to overcome (Zeelenberg et al., 2000).

Social Media Ads

Implementation tips
- Frame new offers as distinctly different and superior to previous missed opportunities
- A/B test messaging that acknowledges vs ignores past missed opportunities
- Emphasize unique benefits and improvements in subsequent offers
- Use time gaps to create psychological distance from previous offers
- Position new offers as learning opportunities rather than similar deals
- Provide clear superiority evidence to overcome comparison bias
eCommerce fit
Medium Useful for re-engagement campaigns and sequential offers, but requires careful positioning to overcome psychological barriers. Most effective when subsequent offers genuinely provide superior or distinct value.
Caution
Don't create inaction inertia by making customers feel bad about missing previous opportunities. Focus on genuine improvements and unique value rather than just repackaging similar offers. Help customers make independent evaluations without comparison pressure.
