Pratfall Effect
People become more likable and relatable when they display minor flaws or mistakes.
Why it works
First documented by Aronson et al. (1966), the pratfall effect shows that minor mistakes increase likability by reducing perceived superiority and increasing relatability. This works only for competent individuals/brands - incompetent entities become less likable when they make mistakes.

Implementation tips
- Only use if your brand/product has established competence and trust
- Focus on minor, relatable flaws rather than major incompetence
- A/B test vulnerability vs confidence - some audiences prefer strength
- Use humor when appropriate to soften the admission of flaws
- Follow up flaws with how you're addressing them or why they exist
- Monitor brand sentiment - stop if authenticity backfires
eCommerce fit
Medium Can build strong brand loyalty and authenticity when used carefully, but requires established trust and careful execution to avoid damaging credibility.
Caution
Only effective for already competent/successful brands - can backfire for new or struggling companies. Avoid admitting major flaws that compromise safety or core functionality. Don't use for regulated industries where perfection is expected (medical, financial, legal).
